Cast and Crew Members of the Misandrists Issue a BDS Solidarity Statement
Following the latest wave of cancellations by international filmmakers from the Israeli government-sponsored propaganda LGBT film festival, TLVFest, cast and crew members of the film “The Misandrists” have issued the following letter in solidarity with the Palestinian call for a cultural boycott of Israel. The statement was prompted by the decision of the director Bruce LaBruce and the film’s producer Jürgen Brüning to cross our boycott picket line and screen their work at the pinkwashing film festival. A growing number of filmmakers have heeded the Palestinian boycott and cancelled their participation.
The Crew and Cast Statement:
It is with great sadness that we have learned that in spite of our request and the request of BDS activists in Palestine to withdraw “The Misandrists” (Director Bruce la Bruce, producer Jürgen Brüning) from the Tel Aviv Film Festival, the filmmakers – who we also count as our respected friends and colleagues – have decided to cross the BDS picket line and screen the film.
That this film “The Misandrists” in particular aspires to revolutionary themes seems to us more reason to withdraw and not usurp the real revolutionary efforts of Palestinian queers in particular and BDS in general, Palestinian people organizing towards their own freedom asking us to stand with them in solidarity.
Pinkwatching Israel, a group of Palestinian queers working within BDS, say: “Your work will be featured in Tel Aviv in the same month as Palestinians mark the 50th anniversary of the military occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory. For decades Israel has been allowed to occupy and deny freedom to a whole people without consequences. Effective international solidarity in the form of boycotts give hope to Palestinians – Palestinian queers included – for freedom, justice and equality.”
We the undersigned actors and crew of THE MISANDRISTS openly stand with Palestinian Queers and their call for the cultural boycott of the Tel Aviv LGBT Film Festival. Unfortunately we cannot stop the film from being shown, but it is showing against our will.
